The Saltire or St. Andrew's Cross is the flag of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Its flag is white saltire (diagonal cross) on a blue field. 

The design is inspired by the cross of St. Andrew upon which Scotland's patron saint was crucified, as it was not upon a cross but upon a diagonal cross. Independence long predates this year's referendum, and the Saltire is one of the world's oldest flags, having been around since at least the 9th century. 

In 14th century, it became an official national flag of Scotland. The Saltire is commonly associated with Scotland and is used in a sporting, cultural and national identity contexts.
